Monopoloy Here and Now

Monopoly. The family favourite board game has had a brand new make over and is expected to do well again in the run up to Christmas.

Published by Parker Brothers/ Hasbro the Monopoly Here & Now World Edition was designed with the help of Monopoly players who were asked to cast their vote on which 22 cities from countries around the world should be included. More than a staggering 5 million votes were cast in August 2008 and the game released soon thereafter.

In the past there have been other themes and numerous editions of Monopoly published but never has it been more exciting for Monopoly fans everywhere than to take part in the selection and bringing it bang up to date.

Monopoly World Edition

The new edition is a far cry from the original 1935 edition. Back then in its first year of production the MONOPOLY game was the best-selling game in America.

Over its 65-year history, an estimated 500 million people have played! Over 200 million sets have been sold worldwide. Today, Monopoly is the best-selling board game in the world, sold in 80 countries and produced in 26 languages.

Players may celebrate at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, organize an international music festival or host a St. Patrick’s Day festival in Dublin. Additionally, the tokens, houses and hotels reflect icons and styles from all seven continents.

The updated version of Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition is available in more than 50 countries and in 37 different languages and is expected to be one of the top 10 2008 toys on some merchants toy lists. It features an interesting mix of cities that shows the sights, history and cultures of our planet.

Worldwide Monopoly

Hasbro also gave a lot of thought when creating this first ever worldwide Monopoly game board making sure it reflected today’s global perspective; Wind Energy and Solar Energy are now featured as the utilities.

Towards the end of August, Hasbro will be coordinating an attempt to set the World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Game of Monopoly, and are inviting people to get involved by playing classic versions, video games, mobile phone versions, and of course the latest and greatest version, Monopoly Here And Now: The World Edition!

Montreal has replaced Mayfair in an international edition of Monopoly known as Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition. Published by Hasbro in August 2008, Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition was designed after a worldwide vote in early 2008 to determine which cities would be included on the board.

Montreal received the most votes, thus earning its spot as the board’s most expensive property.

Riga, the capital of Latvia, finished in second place and will occupy the spot of Park Lane and Athens in Greece replacing the Pentonville Road.

More than 5.6 million votes were cast for 70 cities around the world which appeared on a pre-determined list. That vote determined 20 of the 22 featured cities.

Voters were also asked to write in cities, and the 20 cities with the most write-in votes faced off to determine the brown (least expensive) properties. Taipei, China, and Gdynia, Poland, earned those spots and replace Whitechapel and the Old Kent Road.

“We are thrilled that the first-ever global game board includes an interesting mix of cities that showcases the dynamic cultures, sights and history of the planet,” Helen Martin, Hasbro’s vice-president of global marketing for the Monopoly brand, said in a press release.

Two countries have multiple cities represented on the board. China has four (Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei), and Canada has three (Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver).

The 22 cities that earned spots on the game board of Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition are listed here in order of property groupings with the highest-rent properties listed first.
