Barbie

Since her debut back in 1959 the Barbie Doll and Barbie accessories have become the most successful in the history of the toy industry. In the first year of production new sales records were set and today over one billion dolls are sold proving that Barbie is every girl’s dream doll.

The world was first introduced to this little beauty back in 1959 at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie the adult looking doll was the invention of Ruth Handler who was a co-founder of Mattel Toy Company.

It was at a time when little girls played with dolls that were either baby or child dolls that gave Ruth Handler an idea. Her own daughter Barbara Handler would play for hours with her friends with adult female dolls made of paper and would dress them with paper outfits.

Ruth Handler saw the fun that the children had with grown up dolls and seized on an opportunity to fill the obvious gap in the marketing of dolls in an adult form.

Her initial proposal of creating a doll with a woman’s figure was refused by the all male committee but after a little redesigning and getting the “girl next door” look just right there was a change of heart with the directors of Mattel and they finally agreed to back Handler’s efforts.
